Belgium’s Summer Sales Kick Off Amidst Record-Low Sales and High Stock
Belgium’s summer sales have begun on July 1st, promising a month of deep discounts due to plummeting sales figures and high stock levels. Retailers are facing the worst sales period since 2011 (excluding the pandemic years), with April sales hitting a low not seen since 2008.
Sale this season is expected to be with bumper discounts due to low stock turnover this season
Discounts Galore as Retailers Struggle
Many businesses are starting with discounts of 30% to 50% to entice shoppers and clear excess stock. Independent retailers have already implemented various promotions and deals. If sales remain disappointing due to poor weather, even bigger discounts may follow in the second week of July.
Shopper’s Rights and Refund Policies
Remember, every sale item must display the discount and a reference price. The standard two-year warranty still applies, even on discounted items. While a refund is guaranteed for defective items, it’s not mandatory for products you simply don’t like. Online sales after July 31st might continue, especially on international platforms not bound by Belgian regulations.
Rising Insecurity Concerns Retailers
Beyond bad weather, a significant number of retailers believe rising insecurity is affecting their sales. Over 40% of retailers surveyed reported increased insecurity around their businesses in the past year, citing issues such as drug dealing, assaults, theft, and homelessness.
Call for Collective Action
With local elections approaching, the Union of the Self-Employed and SMEs (UCM) emphasizes the need for future local councilors to recognize the importance of retailers. The UCM advocates for a joint effort between local authorities and retailers to create attractive cities and foster a collective vision for economic revitalization.
